What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional East Asian practice that uses fine, sterile, single-use needles gently placed at selected points on the body.

At Chemin Holistique, acupuncture is guided by the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element acupuncture.

These approaches view the person as a whole, considering physical symptoms, emotional patterns, lifestyle, constitution, and overall balance.

What you may feel during treatment

Sensations during treatment are usually mild. You may notice warmth, tingling, heaviness, a dull ache, or a sense of deep relaxation.

Before treatment begins, I will explain the approach being used and make sure you feel comfortable.

When Acupuncture May Be Helpful

Many people choose acupuncture as a personalised way to support their wellbeing.

It may be used to support:

General balance and vitality

Sleep, rest, and recovery

Relaxation and nervous system settling

Wellbeing during life transitions

Emotional balance during periods of stress

Combined care with Chinese herbal medicine or Shiatsu

Easing tension held in the body

Acupuncture does not replace conventional medical care. If you have symptoms that need medical attention, please consult your doctor or another healthcare professional.

What to Expect

Your first session includes time to discuss your main concerns, general health, medical history, lifestyle, and what you would like support with.

I also use pulse and tongue observation, gentle palpation, and questions about your overall wellbeing to understand patterns according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.

Follow-up sessions are shorter and focus on reviewing how you have been since your previous appointment.

Most people find acupuncture relaxing. Some people feel calm, sleepy, light, or more aware of their body after treatment.

Complementary Techniques

Your acupuncture session may also include one or more traditional techniques, where appropriate.

These will always be explained before use, and you are welcome to decline, pause, or stop any part of the session at any time.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves warming specific areas of the body using the herb mugwort (Artemisia vulgari). The warmth is traditionally used to support comfort, circulation, and balance. It should feel soothing and pleasant, and is never intended to burn the skin.

Cupping

Cupping uses glass or silicone cups placed on the skin to create gentle suction. It is traditionally used to release tension and encourage circulation. Temporary redness or purple marks may appear and usually fade naturally within a few days.
