What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a form of traditional Japanese bodywork based on the principles of Traditional East Asian Medicine.
In this tradition, the body is understood through a network of pathways called meridians, which are traditionally associated with the movement of Qi, or vital energy.
Through gentle pressure, stretches, and other manual techniques along these meridians, Shiatsu aims to support balance in the body, mind, and emotions.
During a session, pressure is applied through clothing using palms, thumbs, and relaxed body weight. Stretches and simple movements may also be included.
The session usually takes place on a futon mattress on the floor. A massage table can be used if lying on a floor mattress is difficult for you.

What Shiatsu May Support
People often come for Shiatsu when they are looking for support with:
General tension or stiffness
Body awareness and grounding
Stress and emotional strain
Support during life transitions
Fatigue or feeling run down
A regular wellbeing routine
Rest and relaxation
Shiatsu is not a medical treatment and does not replace care from your doctor or other healthcare professionals.
Abdominal Shiatsu

In East Asian Medicine, the abdomen can offer useful information about your overall balance. Gentle touch and pressure may be used in this area where appropriate.
If abdominal touch does not feel comfortable for you, or if you have pain, recent surgery, pregnancy, digestive sensitivity, a trauma history, or simply prefer not to include this area, please let me know.
Your session can always be adapted to your comfort and needs.

Follow-up sessions include a short check-in and Shiatsu treatment adapted to how you are feeling on the day.
We review any changes and adjust the session according to your current needs.

Safety and Comfort
Clear communication helps ensure a safe and comfortable session.
Before your session, please let me know about any current health conditions, injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy, infectious skin conditions, allergies, or areas that are sensitive or should be avoided.
Please also tell me at any point during the session if something feels uncomfortable. Pressure, position, or technique can always be adjusted.
If a session is not suitable at the time, I may recommend postponing. This may include situations such as fever, infection, early pregnancy, or recent surgery.
